The Title That Sells–Name Your Paintings With Intention

By Cassie Stone, Founder of REvisART · · Updated

Most artists spend hours on the artwork and seconds on the title. But a thoughtful title can be the difference between someone admiring your painting and someone buying it.

1. Titles Are Emotional Triggers

Artists have sold countless paintings because of the title alone. When a name resonates-a memory, a place, a feeling-it creates an instant emotional attachment that moves a viewer toward purchase.

Don't treat titles as an afterthought. Treat them as part of the artwork.

2. How to Craft a Strong Painting Title

A powerful title:

  • Evokes feeling
  • Suggests story
  • Enhances the viewer's connection
  • Makes the artwork more memorable

Try:

  • Place + Moment: Bayou at Dusk
  • Emotion + Object: Quiet Joy - Gardenia
  • Memory Phrase: First Rain After Fireflies

Avoid vague, generic labels.

3. Stop Naming Diptychs "Gardenia 1 & Gardenia 2"

One of our biggest pet peeves? Numbered titles that say nothing.

If you're creating a pair, give each piece an identity:

  • Gardenia in the Morning
  • Gardenia After Rain

Buyers connect more deeply when titles invite them in.

Final Thoughts

A title can make or break a sale. Slow down, think intentionally, and choose names that amplify the story your art is already telling.

Your next buyer may fall in love with the title before they fall in love with the piece.
